I think it just has to do with openness. People who are out with their alternate life styles and sexuality might not see it as such a big deal to be open about liking ponies as well. Maybe more likely to say something or share about it than someone who is not open with their sexuality in general.

That, and it is/was mainly targeted for female audiences, so over all its not as “weird” for a female to be into the show.
